My interests in jazz are:
all encompassing: pre-jazz/blues to the avant garde, with specialties including Jelly Roll Morton, classic women singers; early Armstrong, Basie and Ellington; bebop; Chicago blues and jazz (early and avant-garde); 1960s culture; Miles Davis; Ornette Coleman; Cecil Taylor; the AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians); free improvisation; American songwriting; jazz composition; jazz in New York, 1959 to present, including loft jazz, "downtown scene,"1982 to present; music of West Africa; salsa and Latin jazz; American studies; jazz and fiction/film/theater; jazz of the future; jazz and world music.
More about what I do:
I want to author or edit long-range book length projects and entertaining yet substantive feature articles for general audiences about unusual, issue-oriented topics. I want to develop online multi-media presentations including reportage and analysis.
I want to teach at the college/university level, as I have for 28 years at New York University.
I want to work in audio and video as well as text. I want to produce action-oriented conferences on arts journalism, and jazz-related topics. I want to produce panel discussions and targeted seminars on diverse music/arts/culture topics. I have designed curriculum for and taught at NYU classes in jazz, blues, "the roots of American music" and world music -- I'm available for lectures and teaching on any related topics.
I support the JJA because
For freelancers, writers and jazz people to stake a claim to treatment as professionals, we must create and sustain a professional climate as can best be done through small non-profit entities such as the JJA. This organization is a bridge between musicians and music-related industries and the media that is most concerned with them. We need to know what we're doing, or at least have the conversation together.
