My interests in jazz are:
personal and professional. I became a professional arts and culture writer in 2008, as a means to preserve the black oral tradition in America. After a few years of mainly writing for NYC’s local publications, in 2011, I was tapped by Lee Mergner to write for JazzTimes. At the top of 2012, I became a freelance contributor for Downbeat and All About Jazz. While much of my jazz coverage has been for Downbeat, my work has since been published in EBONY, Time Out New York, NPR Jazz, Caribbean Beat (the official magazine for Caribbean Airlines), and most recently for Pitchfork. I’ve moderated several panel discussions on jazz at Harlem Stage. I was tapped to write the program notes and playbill for Jon Batiste’s debut at Carnegie Hall. In 2015, I created my first podcast called JAZZLIFE—featuring uncut and intimate discussions with both emerging and legendary jazz artists (available on iTunes and Stitcher Radio). In 2018, I will produce a series of profiles on jazz luminaries for BRIC TV.
More about what I do:
Artist Profiles, Artist Q&As, Live Festival Coverage, Live Show Reviews, CD Reviews, Artist Bios, Playbills (Carnegie Hall), Liner Notes, Website Copy for Artists, Audio Production (Independent Radio), some basic photography (mainly stills)
