JJA members may, at no charge, attend Winter Jazzfest Artists Presenters Showcases, Fri Jan 14 and Sat Jan 15, featuring more than 60 jazz and creative music bands in five venues -- the Bitter End, Kenny’s Castaways, (le) Poisson Rouge, Sullivan Hall and Zinc Bar -- grouped around Bleecker St. in Greenwhich Village in New York City-- but advance registration and approval is required. Again for the 2016 Jazz Awards, the JJA will be honoring a short form jazz news video that is being distributed online. Anyone, not just JJA Professional Members, can nominate in this category. A nominated Short-Form Jazz News Video must be an original jazz video production that is 12.5 minutes or less AND was first Posted on the web between January 1, 2015 and January 1, 2016. Click to sign up for updates and application information (when it's available) for the JJA Jazz Video project. Non-members will be eligible to apply.

This project, funded by a Jazz.NEXT grant from the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, through the generous support of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, will support hands-on training in basic video skills and explore new ways of using video in jazz journalism. We'll be sending out program applications soon. The program focus is on low-cost but high quality video production that can be done-on-deadline. Accepted applicants will be equipped with pocket video cameras and trained in basic production and editing techniques, in journalistic skills such as how to conduct good on-camera interviews, and in professional issues such as how to protect musicians' rights while disseminating video reports featuring them as widely as possible. Training will also be open to JJA members who provide their own equipment. We'll sponsor online discussions about innovative ways to use and distribute jazz video, inviting publishers and presenters as well as musicians and educators into these discussions of how video can be better used to develop new audiences for jazz (and in doing so, provide new work opportunities for jazz journalists.
