I am a jazz
  • writer
My interests in jazz are:
I've been writing about jazz since the late 1950s when I first fell in love with it. I've published two books about it, "Music & Politics" (with John Sinclair) and "Giants of Black Music" (with Pauline Rivelli). I've written for Rolling Stone, The Village Voice (where I had a weekly jazz column), Downbeat, Metronome, the American Record Guide, All About Jazz and Jazz & Pop (where I was the Jazz Editor).
More about what I do:
I've also written some 100 liner notes for labels like Blue Note, Prestige, Impulse and United Artists. They include albums by John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Coleman Hawkins and Cecil Taylor.
I'm not as active as I once was, but I do maintain a website which, besides short fiction and general commentary, has a jazz category. Posted there are interviews with, or discussions about, Cecil Taylor, Booker Little, Jimmy Lyons, Sunny Murray, Anthony Braxton and "free jazz." https://robert-levin.com
