Chicago-based Marc Monaghan, official photographer of the Hyde Park Jazz Festival since 2007, is a former educator and research scientist, with a Ph.D. in Earth & Planetary Sciences from Yale University and geological field experience in Kenya, Tanzania, Pakistan, Egypt and the western United States.
Now covering music throughout the city's South Side, he contends with all performance photographer's concerns: music access, stage clutter, lighting, maintaining respect for the audience and musicians, and time on task. "During the 2024 Hyde Park Jazz Festival," he reports, "I shot 15 venues on its first day, riding my bike a total of about 10 miles back and forth between the various venues. At each venue I had 10 to 20 minutes to make pictures. I have learned to embrace stage clutter."
Marc will discuss images and career wisdom during a seminar-style discussion moderated by Hrayr Attarian.
